Pongal Greetings: Thai Pongal is one of the most popular harvest festivals in Tamil Nadu. It is usually celebrated annually between January 14 and 16. The four-day celebration is a great time for family gatherings and cooking food in the traditional style. Usually, a new clay pot is decorated with turmeric sticks, and new rice, dal and jaggery are boiled to make a sweet dish. It is then offered to the gods, and families sit together and enjoy munching on delicious sugarcane. It is a time of year when we thank nature for providing a bountiful harvest. Pongal is usually referred to as Thai Pongal since it falls in the month of Thai according to the Tamil calendar. A popular quotation among all Tamilians is 'Thai pirandhaal vazhi pirakkum,' reflecting the belief that all tricky situations can be resolved during Pongal. We don't know how true this is, but it is a traditional belief. The first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi, when old things are burnt; on the second day, people make the sweet rice dish; the third day is Mattu Pongal, when cows are bathed and adorned with flowers; and the fourth day is Kanum Pongal, when families get together and have picnics.
